Anti-Camping Ordinance Tabled in Canyon

A proposed ban on public property camping in Canyon was tabled on Monday night.

During a meeting of the Canyon City Commission, Commissioners chose to table the resolution to ban camping on public property in the city limits. The resolution was tabled by Mayor Gary Hinders after no motion was made for the item's passage.

Prior to the start of the meeting, those opposing the proposed ordinance protested outside of Canyon City Hall. Holding banners and signs, protesters argued that the ban would unfairly discriminate against those who are homeless. Among those who addressed the Commission in opposition to the ban was Chris Seright, founder of Amarillo Housing First.

The issue of an ongoing federal lawsuit against the City of Amarillo for a similar ordinance was brought up during public comment, which drew concerns from Commissioner Paul Lyons. A Canyon Police Department official argued during the meeting that the ordinance would only be enforced against those who would "habitually violate" the law, although this was not enough to secure passage of the legislation.

If approved, Commissioners would have signed off on a ban on camping on public property in Canyon. The ban would have carried a penalty of up to $500 for a violation.

It is unclear whether Commissioners intend to consider the legislation for a meeting in the future. We will keep our readers updated on any future dealings with this legislation.
