Following a controversial week for the Amarillo City Council, the body's regular meeting for Tuesday has been cancelled.
It was announced on Friday that the Amarillo City Council would not be conducting a regular meeting on Tuesday, April 10th. Instead, the City Council would only be meeting in a work session, in which the Council discusses, but does not act, on various topics around the City. On the work session's agenda for Tuesday are two proclamations and a discussion over the Council's Code of Conduct and Code of Ethics. Councilmembers may also receive a construction update on the downtown baseball park.
In addition, an email obtained by the Amarillo Pioneer shows that city secretary Frances Hibbs informed residents on Friday that the public comment portion of the meeting for Tuesday has been cancelled, as the City Council will not hold such a period during a regular work session. However, those who had signed up to speak this week were bumped over to next Tuesday's agenda to speak to Councilmembers on various topics.
The move to cancel Tuesday's meeting follows a controversial week for the Amarillo City Council. During last Tuesday's meeting, one resident announced his intention to sue City Councilmembers and another resident was arrested and charged with Disrupting a Meeting for clapping during the meeting. The incident attracted attention nationwide and was covered by outlets such as the Fort Worth Star Telegram, the Sacramento Bee, the Texas Scorecard and others.
The Amarillo City Council will meet for a work session on Tuesday, April 10th at Amarillo City Hall (509 Southeast 7th Avenue, Council Chambers). The session begins at 3pm.
