Group Seliger Claimed to Support was Planned Parenthood Organization

An organization that received financial support from Senator Kel Seliger nearly two decades ago was a DBA organization of Planned Parenthood of Amarillo, records show.

According to records obtained by the Amarillo Pioneer, an organization to which Seliger claimed to have given financial support instead of Planned Parenthood of Amarillo, was a DBA of the same organization. In 2004, Seliger told the Amarillo Globe-News that he had financially supported Kids in the Know, and not Planned Parenthood of Amarillo. However, records show that Kids in the Know was filed as a DBA name of Planned Parenthood of Amarillo and the Texas Panhandle in 2005, with Claudia Stravato listed as its registered agent with the Texas Secretary of State's office.

The DBA filed in 2005, was set for a period to last through 2015. According to records, Kids in the Know was an organization that aimed to teach Amarillo area youth topics regarding abstinence. The non-profit organization held multiple events and conferences in Amarillo, including events at Amarillo churches.

Senator Seliger told Amarillo media that he wrote a check to Kids in the Know in 2000, instead of to a Planned Parenthood of Amarillo event.

"I have no record of it personally," Seliger told the Amarillo Globe-News regarding claims that he financially supported a Planned Parenthood event in 2000. "If it was from my business, I don't know. My brother also supports things, and he knew that we were supporting Kids in the Know. I thought we wrote a check to Kids in the Know. And about a check for this event, I have no record."

At the time of the 2000 event, Seliger was still mayor of Amarillo and would seek a term in the Texas Senate four years later.

Seliger is running for re-election in the March 6th Republican primary election against restaurant owner Victor Leal and former Midland mayor Mike Canon. A runoff, if necessary, will be held on May 22nd.
