One Detained in Austin Middle School Threat

One person has been detained after making a threat toward Austin Middle School.

According to the Amarillo Police Department, officers were alerted to a threat of a shooting made against Austin Middle School on Monday. The social media threat was spreading through Snapchat and other social media websites.

Officers investigated and found a juvenile male involved in posting the threat. Authorities determined that the juvenile did not have the means to carry out the threat. He was then detained and placed in the Youth Center of the High Plains.

Authorities were also sent to Bowie Middle School at around 9am on Tuesday, after receiving a call that there was an active scooter at the school. A parent had received a text from their student stating that there was a rumor of shooting and the parent called officers to report a shooting. Officers responded and determined that there was no shooter and no threats had been made against Bowie Middle School.

Amarillo residents are being asked to refrain from sharing any unsubstantiated threats online. If you see a threat, you are asked to call the Amarillo Police Department.
