Amarillo College Wins Advertising Awards

"Accolades for Best of Show and a Special Judges’ Award accentuated the sweeping excellence of Amarillo College students and staff at the 2018 awards banquet of Amarillo’s chapter of the American Advertising Federation.

The Federation’s ADDY Awards, which recognize excellence in advertising, were bestowed Feb. 24 at the Derrick Event Center in downtown Amarillo.

Students in AC’s Matney Mass Media Program emerged with a coveted Best of Show Award and a Gold ADDY in the student division for a publication that had previously achieved national acclaim.

The Spring 2017 issue of “AC Current,” which in 2017 captured an Associated Collegiate Press Pacemaker Award – college journalism’s preeminent prize – and a national Pinnacle Award, too, was named Best of Show and claimed Gold.

Students credited with the achievement include: Jenna Gibson, editor; Destiny Kranthoven, art director; Claire Ekas, assistant editor; Michelle Martinez, graphic designer; and Salvador Gutierrez, page editor.

Additionally, the Fall 2017 issue of “AC Current” snared a Silver ADDY in the Magazine Design category.

“I'm pleased that AC Student Media is continuing its tradition of excellence,” said Jill Gibson, mass media program chair and student media adviser. “These ADDY awards mark yet another milestone in the College's achievements.”

Two other AC students received singular Elements of Advertising – Illustration recognition. Stephen Zallar received a Gold ADDY for “3 Finger Font” and Jacob Harter won a Silver ADDY for “Battle Earth Cards.”

The College also had cause to celebrate the results of the professional competition, in which representatives from AC’s Communications and Marketing Department accepted a Gold ADDY and a special Judges’ Award for Effective Use of Medium.

The recognition was for AC’s outdoor board/social media campaign “Success Begins In,” and was presented to Penny Massey, marketing manager; Sadie Newsome, digital content manager, and Wes Condray-Wright, director.

Also in the professional division, AC won a Silver ADDY in Elements of Advertising – Logo Design, for its Amarillo Master Chorale Logo.

Stefanie Carruth, AC graphic designer, Nathaniel Fryml, director of AC’s Master Chorale, and Condray-Wright were credited with the Silver ADDY.

“I’m so incredibly proud of the creative group we have at AC,” Condray-Wright said. “They are upbeat, they constantly amaze me with their variety of talents, and their focus on student success is outstanding.”"
