'Digging In': New Baseball Team Given Sod Poodles Name

The Amarillo Sod Poodles. That’s the name Amarillo sports fans can expect to see on the door of the downtown stadium beginning in April.

On Tuesday, Amarillo Professional Baseball announced the new baseball team will be given the name Sod Poodles, following a naming contest presented to fans. Meant to pay homage to the prairie dog of the high plains, the Sod Poodles emerged as the favorite from a pack of four other names, which included the Jerky, the Boot Scooters, the Long Haulers, and the Bronc Busters.

“This has been an amazing journey that we have taken with the community here in Amarillo,” organization general manager Tony Ensor said in a press release. “Our goal from the beginning was to create an iconic identity that appeals to kids and families and is unlike any other in the country. The Sod Poodle proudly symbolizes a brand that cannot be ignored and is Authentically Amarillo!”

During the ceremony to unveil the name, several individuals spoke in favor of the team, including Mayor Ginger Nelson and ex-mayor Jerry Hodge. Several citizens and media teams attended the announcement.

Uniforms are expected to be revealed later this year. Merchandise with the Sod Poodles logo is currently available at www.sodpoodles.com.
