Exclusive: Rosas to Run for City Council

A 33-year-old Amarillo businessman is throwing his hat into the ring for a spot on the Amarillo City Council next year.

Steven Rosas, an Amarillo businessman, wedding planner and personal trainer, told the Amarillo Pioneer on Friday he will be running for a seat on the City Council next year. Rosas said he has decided to run after seeing what he feels to be a lack of communication on the part of the current City Council.

“I’ve always been interested in running, but recently with the changes I have been seeing on the City Council…it seems like they are making things harder for citizens who want to speak out at meetings,” Rosas said.

If elected in May 2019, Rosas said he plans to work on addressing the issue of City Council meetings in a way that will allow more citizens to attend and speak, addressing the at-large City Council composition and the current spending and taxing levels in Amarillo.

Overall, however, Rosas wants to improve communication at City Hall.

“I want to make it easy on Amarillo citizens to get involved,” Rosas said.

Rosas has not yet specified which seat he plans to run for, but said he will not run for mayor in 2019. Rosas is the second challenger to announce a run for a seat, following several social media announcements by Hayden Pedigo, a candidate for City Council Place 2.

Voters will decide the composition of the Amarillo City Council in May 2019. At that time, all four City Council seats and the mayor’s position will be up for grabs.

Filing will officially begin in January.
