City: Know Your Contractor Before Paying for Repairs

After damaging storms, the City of Amarillo’s Building Safety department would like to encourage residents to assess the situation of their damage and the contractor offering repairs before any of those repairs begin.

When contracting for repairs, be sure that you are dealing with a company that is registered with the Building Safety department by calling (806) 378-3041 or by going online to http://bit.ly/ContractorInformation to verify the company is registered for the type of work being offered.

The City of Amarillo also strongly suggests you check for customer service, complaints, and review the contractor’s history with the Better Business Bureau (BBB). You may do this by calling (806) 379-6222 or visiting the BBB at www.bbb.org/Amarillo. Although you may be anxious to get things back to normal, remember to be patient as contractors and insurance adjusters will be busy right now.

The City of Amarillo and BBB advises to get temporary repairs done now so you can take your time researching the company that is going to be right for you – one that can do your job, is a company you can work with, and one that has a proven track record.

It is always a good idea to get multiple bids and compare prices and when you do decide on a company make sure you have a written contract that states the work to be done, the materials to be used, and the price breakdown for both labor and materials. Review it carefully before signing and never sign a blank contract, avoid paying cash, and do not pay for all repairs in advance.
