Lubbock Businessman, Tech Donor "Rip" Griffin Passes at 88

B.R. "Rip" Griffin, Lubbock businessman and donor to Texas Tech University, has passed away according to the Daily Toreador.

Griffin, 88, was the owner of Rip Griffin Truck Service Center, Inc. Griffin founded the company in 1964 and Griffin founded Pro Petroleum, Inc. in 1989. Griffin began his truck stop company with a three-pump gasoline station in Lubbock on Avenue A.

An Army veteran, Griffin enrolled in Texas Tech while hauling gas on the weekends. Griffin graduated from Texas Tech University in 1955 with a Bachelor of Science degree.

Griffin served on the Lubbock Christian University Board of Trustees for 42 years and was the namesake for the Lubbock Christian athletic arena, the Rip Griffin Center. The Rip Griffin Park at Texas Tech University was named for Griffin in 2012.

A memorial service for Griffin is planned for June 27th at the Broadway Church of Christ in Lubbock.
