Animal Management & Welfare Offering Winter Pet Safety Tips

As winter begins today, Amarillo Animal Management & Welfare is offering tips to local pet owners to keep animals safe this season.

Residents are advised to bring pets inside during the freezing weather. If pets are unable to be brought indoors, a shelter should be provided. The AAM&W recommends that heating be added to the dry, clean, draft-free shelter to ensure a reduced risk of hypothermia.

Pet owners should also be vigilant about wiping off the bottoms of the pets' paws before the pet has a chance to lick them. This will ensure that pets will not be exposed to toxins from snow salts and similar chemicals.

In addition, all animals should be provided clean water and food. Pets must also be kept away from toxic plants such as Poinsettia, Mistletoe, Amaryllis, and Common Holly.
