U.S. Sen. John Cornyn’s popularity dropped drastically in Texas last month, according to a new poll released by the Texas Politics Project at the University of Texas at Austin.
According to the poll, a majority of Texans now disapprove of the job Cornyn is doing as senator, with 50 percent giving Cornyn an unfavorable grade. Meanwhile, 24 percent of Texans approved of Cornyn’s job as senator.
The poll marked a drastic drop in support for Cornyn, who had previously been sitting underwater in the same poll in April, albeit by a much smaller margin. In April, the same poll showed a 32 percent favorable rating for the senator, versus 39 percent disapproving of his job performance.
Cornyn’s drop in support comes on the heels of his appearance at the Texas Republican Party convention last month in Houston, where delegates booed Cornyn so loudly at points that he could not be heard in the convention hall while giving his speech. That reaction from delegates followed Cornyn’s decision to play a large role in the Republican delegation of senators who negotiated a gun control bill with Senate Democrats.
Cornyn was most recently re-elected to his job in 2020. He will be up for re-election in Texas in 2026.
