APD Releases Information on Accident Involving Police Unit

The Amarillo Police Department has released information regarding an accident that involved a police unit.

According to APD, at 12:13pm, officers were dispatched to an accident on Canyon Drive, north of 45th Avenue. The vehicle had hit a light pole and the light pole was laying down blocking the outside traffic lane of northbound traffic on Canyon Drive. An officer blocked the ramp to Canyon Drive, while a second officer was on the top of the bridge, over 45th Avenue.

At 12:30pm the officer saw a vehicle quickly approaching in his rear view mirror. The vehicle was able to stop, but a Ford Mustang behind the vehicle was unable to stop and lost control. The Mustang started to spin and did not strike the other vehicle but did hit the rear end of the police car.

Both the APD officer and Mustang driver were transported to the hospital.

APD's Traffic Unit is investigating.
